INSECTS-CLOSEST RIVALS OF HUMAN RACE
It seems the struggle between man and insects began long before the dawn of civilization. Insects are man’s closest rivals for world supremacy because they destroy his food, clothing, building etc. and are capable of transmitting some of the most serious human diseases. Hardly it need emphasis that insects are the most successful and diverse creatures at the present time on earth. Nearly a million species have been identified and described so far and many more are yet to be discovered.
Household Pests
There are a large number of pests that are normally found in all types of human dwellings. Among the most familiar household pests are the cockroaches, bed bugs, crickets, various types of ants, silverfish, clothes moths and carpet beetles, houseflies and mosquitoes, white ants (termites) and powder beetles, spiders and ticks, rats and other rodents etc. etc. All these pests are a great source of nuisance in residential & commercial houses, offices, factories, hotels & restaurants, hospitals etc. Quite a few of these pests are a serious health hazard as they serve to carry the germs of various fatal diseases. They also cause heavy damage to our food stuffs and property by destroying and feeding on them.
1.Cockroaches:-
Cockroaches are found to flourish throughout the world except the polar regions. Over 2500 species have been identified and described by the entomologists so far. The three common species found in India are Periplaneta Americana, Blatta orientalls and Blatella gormanica.
Habits of Cockroaches: - They are found in places where there is warmth, dampness and plenty of organic food to devour such as kitchens, pantries, bakeries, hotels, restaurants, godowns, store rooms, sewers, drainage pipes, etc. etc. The cockroaches are mainly nocturnal in habits avoiding bright daylight by hiding in cracks & crevices etc. and coming out at night in search of food. They are omnivorous or scavangerous in their diet devouring and damaging and kind of food coming in their way. They have in some cases been found to devour the dead bodies of some animals.
COCKROACHES by virtue of their living habits are found to infest indiscriminately all refuse, garbage and even human excreta. They are simultaneously observed to feed on human food stuffs. This habit of these creatures poses a serious health hazard as they serve to transfer the disease carrying germs from flith to food stuffs. It is reported that cockroaches alone are possible mechanical carriers of nearly one hundred type of disease carrying organisms. Under the circumstances, the magnitude of health hazards involved needs hardly any emphasis.
2. Bed Bugs:- Bed Bugs are small, flat oval insects that grow to about 5mm in length, about the size of an apple seed. They have a brownish body, that after feeding will become a red colour. Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and animals and most commonly at night, making them nasty house guests if they do find their way into your home or property.
These insects are prolific breeders, so once they attach themselves to a hosts item of clothing or luggage, occasionally used furniture and couches that are already hosting these pests, a room/house/hotel room can quickly become infested. They then hide in small cracks and crevices because of their shape they can fit into places as thin as a credit card. Bedside furniture, luggage (especially if you travel frequently), and in particular mattresses, box springs, bed frame, headboards, loose wallpaper and bedside furniture are their favorite hiding places, making it easy for them to find, and feed on human blood at night.
They can spread fast so it is important to identify and eradicate bedbugs these pests quickly.
3. Crickets:- Crickets normally love to live in warmth & hide in holes & crevices behind boxes, books etc., in kitchens, bakeries, living boxes, books etc., in kitchens, bakeries, living rooms etc. They are omnivorous in their feeding habits and destroy all types of cloth, paper, fruits, vegetables, food stuff etc,
4. Ants:- Ants are among the most familiar highly evolved social inspects. Most of the species of ants make superficial colonies in the soil. Many of them enter the residential houses in search of food and hence become a source of regular annoyance. Sometimes these ants become a serious pest of eatables and also cause paintful bites.
5. Silver Fish:- Silver Fish is a common household pest hiding in damp cool places such as basements, among books, under pictures, wall papers and in clothes etc. It avoids bright light and feeds on starched clothes and paste or glue in book bindings as its food consists of starch only.
6. Clothes Moth and Carpet Beetles:- Clothes Moths and Carpet Beetles are of common occurrence in all residential and commercial places attacking woolen clothing, carpets, fur, feathers etc. Keeping in view the damage, they can cause to the valuable property, they are termed as destructive household pests.
7. Housefly and Mosquito:- Houseflies and mosquitoes are the most familiar pests of household and public health importance. Both these pests belong to the order Diptra as they have only one pair of wings. They occupy a special position in Medical Entomology as both serve as carriers of many of the fatal human diseases. Malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, filariasis are spread by mosquitoes and typhoid, dysentery, cholera, trachoma and many others by houseflies.
8. Termites (White ants) & Wood (Powder) Beetles:- Termites (White ants) and Powder Beetles are extremely familiar and most destructive pests which cause exclusive damage estimated at several hundred crores of rupees every year to our valuable assets like buildings, furnitures, books, clothings etc.
TERMITES (WHITE ANTS)
Most of the species of Termites (White ants) live in the form of Colonies in the soil and have a very highly organized social system, each caste performing a specific function. The worker caste is the most important member of the colony and do the work of building nests, act as scavengers and provide food to the entire colony. These workers though blind, move far and wide in search of food and are capable of carrying out destruction in a remarkably thorough and efficient manner.
The only way to get rid of these most destructive pests is to provide PCAS Anti-Termite Treatment for the buildings either at the time of construction (BUILT-IN-TERMITE TREATMENT) or POST CONSTRUCTION ANTI-TERMITE TREATMENT for the buildings which were constructed in the previous years. The treatment consists of creating a chemical barrier between the soil and the building pumping effective Anti-termite chemicals in Suitable Concentration so as to kill these pests that may be present in the soil.
Wood (Powder) Beetles
Powder beetles popularly known as ‘ghun’ damage the wooden structures made of either commercial ply/board or SOFTWOOD by feeding and boring in the layers of Poor quality of wood. They eject fine white powder and make the structures completely hollow from inside. The treatment of these pests consists of spraying and fumigating all the wooden structures fitted in the premises.
9. Non-Insect Pests:- There are a large number of non-insect pests such as spiders, rats, ticks, etc. etc. Which are found in the residential and commercial houses and either do considerable damage or are a great source of nuisance. Rats alone are responsible for doing damage running in crores of rupees every year by eating and destroying various food products and other assets. There are many species of rats found in the houses under varying conditions. They normally prefer to live in burrows in the dark and other hiding places.
Control Measures

It has been invariably reported by medical and health authorities that the indiscriminate use of pesticides for control household and public health pests may lead to serious health hazards. Formulations with low mammalian toxicity and in suitable concentration be only used so as to control the various pests & also not do any harm to the persons living there.
Control of various types of pests require technical knowledge regarding the habits and mode of their living, professional experience, right type of equipment and trained operators who can effectively undertake the operations.
